Appeal in Wawoe case begins with preliminary hearing on 8 October
The appeal in the case against Urvin 'Nuto' Wawoe begins on 8 October with a preliminary hearing, according to NU.cw (Dutch Caribbean). On 22 September, Wawoe was sentenced by the court to a life prison sentence.
The court found him responsible for more than ten murders, drug trafficking and the leadership of the criminal organisation No Limit Soldiers. He was acquitted of the 2014 Hato shooting.
According to local media, the life sentence came as a surprise to his lawyer Alicia Blonk. Wawoe continues to deny his involvement in all the charges brought against him, although the court found that involvement proven during the hearing on 22 September.
The preliminary hearing on 8 October has no substantive character. During such a hearing, further procedural steps are discussed and the suspect can make any wishes known.
