37-year-old held in custody following attempted theft in Larnaca town centre
An alarm was triggered at a shop selling antique items in the centre of Larnaca in the early hours of Monday, 26 October. Individuals who happened to be in the area noticed suspicious behaviour inside the shop and decided to act. On their own initiative, they restrained a foreign man until the appropriate security forces arrived.
According to an official statement, the arrested man is 37 years old and comes from a European Union country, without this being specified. He had arrived on the island on a tourist visa. He is accused of attempting to take an item from the shop without permission. Additionally, a complaint against him is being examined in connection with an assault on the owner of the business.
The incident was recorded on video, showing members of the public restraining the suspect on the pavement. A few minutes later, officers from the local police station went to the scene and took control of the situation.
The next day, Tuesday, 27 October, the suspect was brought before a judicial authority with a view to the issuing of a temporary detention warrant. This decision will allow prosecution officials to proceed with investigations without time constraints. The preliminary investigation is being directed by the competent criminal cases office in the area.
