Car Attack near Hanover: Investigation Points to Family Conflict
Welt.de reports that police in Neustadt am Rübenberge near Hanover seek to prevent escalation following a deliberate car attack. On Monday evening, a driver intentionally steered his vehicle into a group of people, leaving at least five people with minor to serious injuries. Police officers who were conducting a traffic stop fired on the vehicle to stop the attack. The perpetrator then fled on foot.
Following the incident, police arrested a 36-year-old man with German and Lebanese nationality. The man is in custody awaiting trial and made no statement regarding the charges. The Hildesheim public prosecutor's office is investigating on suspicion of attempted murder.
According to Ilka Kreye, head of Garbsen police station, initial investigations point to a conflict between large families, some of whom are associated with organised crime. Neustadt is regarded as a focal point for such conflicts in the Hanover area. Investigators assume that those involved knew each other. Kreye emphasised that such conflicts are frequently settled amongst themselves and are rarely reported to police – which complicates investigative work.
Although current investigative findings indicate no evidence that uninvolved persons were directly in danger, police ordered increased presence in Neustadt to strengthen the sense of security. This reinforcement will remain in place as long as the situation requires it. Police appeal to the public not to share recordings of the incident, but to make them available to police.
