Looting and arrests in Frankfurt city centre following Gen Z demonstration
Serious incidents broke out in Frankfurt's city centre after the conclusion of a "Gen Z" demonstration, according to Naftemporiki. Approximately 100 people with covered faces headed to the central shopping street Zeil, smashed shop windows using traffic signs and proceeded to loot.
The demonstration itself, which was attended by approximately 8,000 people, proceeded peacefully. The incidents only occurred on its margins, after the crowd had dispersed.
Police forces initially attempted to disperse the rioters with water cannons, without result. They then arrested at least five people on the spot and seized two weapons. Members of the group attacked police officers with broken bottles, stones and pyrotechnics, whilst dozens of arrests were made in total.
At least one police officer was seriously injured. Hesse's Interior Minister, Roman Pörtzel, denounced the events as "left-wing extremist violence" on the margins of the gathering.
