Attack with car — five injured in Lower Saxony

According to WELT, a driver deliberately drove into a crowd of people on Mecklenhorster Straße in Neustadt am Rübenberge at approximately 23:30 hours. At least five people were injured, some of them seriously. The injured were taken to hospital, but are not in danger of their lives.

The driver deliberately steered a BMW at the group of people, left the car at the scene and fled. Whether there were additional people in the vehicle is subject to investigation. A dpa reporter reported several damaged vehicles with flat tyres, a smashed rear window and bullet holes.

Police officers conducted a check at the address of the vehicle's registered owner and provisionally arrested three people. According to investigations so far, those involved knew each other. According to police, they belong to large families that have previously come to attention in connection with clan crime.

A police spokeswoman said that the exact roles in the offence are still subject to investigation. Officers who were conducting a traffic stop near Schützenplatz became aware of the attack shortly before midnight. They fired on the car in order to stop it. A search for further suspects involving a police helicopter and numerous personnel was initially unsuccessful.

Witnesses are requested to contact Hannover's permanent criminal investigation service on 0511 109-5555.
