Police shoot at car following attack on group of people in Lower Saxony – several injured
In an incident in Neustadt am Rübenberge north-west of Hanover on late Monday evening, several people were injured after a vehicle drove into a group. Police subsequently opened fire on the car. According to a police spokesperson who spoke to news agency dpa, four or five people were injured, some of them seriously. However, the injured were not in danger of their lives; they were taken to hospital. This was reported by Večernji list citing dpa.
The exact circumstances of the incident remain unclear. The suspects, whose number is also yet to be established, fled on foot and abandoned the vehicle. They have not been apprehended so far. A dpa journalist reported several damaged cars with punctured tyres, smashed rear windows and bullet holes.
Initial investigative findings suggest that those involved knew each other. The suspects apparently attacked the group deliberately and not by chance, the police spokesperson explained. Officers who were carrying out a routine traffic check nearby responded to the incident just before midnight and shot at the vehicle to stop it. Numerous police officers and a helicopter were involved in the operation.
