Car deliberately driven into pedestrian group in Lower Saxony – several seriously injured
Near Neustadt am Rübenberge in the vicinity of Hanover, a vehicle was intentionally driven onto a pavement on Monday evening where several people were standing. At least four people were seriously injured in the incident. The perpetrators left the car and fled on foot after police officers opened fire on them. Investigators are examining the connection between the suspects and the victims, who apparently knew each other.
The incident occurred under circumstances that remain entirely unclear. A police spokesperson explained that the exact sequence of events and the precise relationship between those involved are still subject to investigation. The suspects had probably deliberately targeted the specific group of people rather than selecting them at random.
Officers happened to be at the location carrying out a routine traffic control and responded immediately. Police gunfire caused the tyres of the getaway vehicle to burst and its windows to shatter. The perpetrators, whose exact number is still unknown, then fled on foot. Police are now searching for them with the support of a helicopter, amongst other measures.
