A corporal of the National Police was held for one year in a high-security cell after a judge imposed preventive detention on him for the murder of a 19-year-old youth in Santo Domingo Oeste.

A judge in the jurisdiction of Santo Domingo Oeste determined that José Francisco Moreta Heredia, a member of the National Police with the rank of corporal, must remain detained for twelve months whilst proceedings against him continue regarding the death of a minor.
The ruling was issued by magistrate Reye Rodríguez at the Permanent Care Office of the said district. The uniformed officer must serve the sentence at the Las Parras Correction and Rehabilitation Centre, in San Antonio de Guerra, under high-security regime.
The fatal incident that claimed the life of Darlin Enmanuel Mercado Reyes, who had only just turned 19 years old, occurred on Friday 3 July in the Herrera zone. According to the accusation made by prosecutor Anyelina Vicioso, the police official had previously detained another individual, Fénix Junior Ceballos Guzmán.
In the judicial proceeding, the representatives of the Public Ministry—the fiscal prosecutor Edward López and prosecutor Alexandra Marine—succeeded in having the tribunal classify the procedure as a complex case, in addition to obtaining the security measure that was requested.
In parallel, the judge instructed the local Prosecutorial Office to immediately provide mechanisms for protection and emotional support for both the family members of the victim and those who witnessed the events.
