According to preliminary investigations cited by the National Police, sergeant Henríquez Mejía, attached to the Investigation Directorate (DICRIM) Central Cibao, was conducting intelligence operations when his vehicle collided with the motorcycle being ridden by the two young men. The incident reportedly sparked an argument that escalated into an exchange of gunfire, during which the non-commissioned officer sustained a wound to the left shoulder that proved fatal.
