Jefferson Mauricio M., known as alias 'Caballo', was detained by the National Police on 2 June 2026 in the Luz de América circuit, province of Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas, according to primicias.ec.

The suspect, 27 years old, was a fugitive from justice and was classified as a high-danger priority criminal objective. Dinased agents intercepted him with two active arrest warrants against him.

Upon receiving the detention order, 'Caballo' allegedly ignored the instructions of the uniformed officers and reportedly pointed a firearm at them, resulting in an exchange of gunfire. At that moment, the suspect jumped into a river in an attempt to escape.

During the escape in the water, he allegedly threw the weapon into the river and destroyed the mobile phones he was carrying. He failed to reach the bank and was stopped by police officers. In images captured from the operation, he can be seen emerging from the water with a wound on his leg.

The authorities recovered two destroyed mobile phones from the river and seized a motorcycle as evidence in the case. The firearm could not be located despite search efforts.

Jefferson Mauricio M. has a criminal record for unauthorised possession of weapons and homicide, and was prosecuted for two additional cases of violent deaths that occurred in 2025 and 2026.
