Minnesota Twins third baseman Miguel Sano was detained by the National Police in San Pedro de Macorís during the early hours of Sunday, after his vehicle struck officer Argenis Emilio Gillandeux in front of the nightclub Riversay, according to the police report.
The officer suffered a fracture to his leg. He was on duty in the vicinity of the establishment at the time of the incident.
According to reporting by usatoday.com, Sano was driving a vehicle without licence plates and was not carrying identification at the time of his detention.
The newspaper Listín Diario reported that Sano was released shortly after his detention, after committing to present himself at the police station on Monday at 9 in the morning. According to the same publication, the player offered to cover the medical expenses of the injured officer.
The Twins issued a statement through a spokesperson: "We are aware of the situation involving Miguel Sano in the Dominican Republic. At this time we are continuing to gather information."
Sano, 25 years old, had returned to his home country the previous week, upon the conclusion of the Twins' season.
