The National Police of the Dominican Republic arrested four men on Monday afternoon, identified as alleged perpetrators of an armed robbery at a jewellery store located on San Luis Street in Santiago de los Caballeros, according to infobae.com.
The four individuals threatened staff at the establishment with firearms and took cash along with a significant quantity of precious items before fleeing in a grey Honda CR-V jeep.
Search and detention operation
The robbery was reported at approximately 16:10. Authorities received the alert immediately and activated response protocols, deploying police units that circulated descriptions of the vehicle and suspects.
Minutes later, the vehicle was located and intercepted on Avenida Estrella Sadhalá, where the four individuals were arrested. They were identified as Marcos José García de la Cruz, Andy José Castillo Jiménez, Delvinson Luis Restituyo Mejía and Heber Isaac Burgos García.
Evidence recovered
During the police operation, 36,150 Dominican pesos (equivalent to approximately $618.67) in cash, 4,895 grams of silver, four silver earrings, several mobile phones, gloves, balaclavas and a pistol without documentation, allegedly used in the robbery, were seized.
Evidence capsules were also confiscated and placed in custody for investigation purposes. The cash, recovered items and other evidence will be sent to the Public Ministry, which will determine formal charges and requests for coercive measures.
Context of recent operations
This case is part of a series of operations carried out in recent months in the country. During the first half of 2026, the National Police reported multiple arrests linked to robberies at jewellery stores, banks and businesses in different provinces.
In Santiago and Santo Domingo, the two main cities of the republic, authorities have recorded the arrest of at least 15 people in incidents related to robberies at commercial and financial establishments. In most cases, those involved have been subjected to coercive measures and sent to preventive detention whilst investigations proceed.
The recovery of stolen goods and the capture of those responsible has been achieved in several of these incidents through preventive patrols, CCTV cameras and timely citizen reports.
Applicable legal framework
The Dominican Penal Code classifies armed robbery as a serious crime. Articles 379 and following establish that robbery with violence or intimidation can be punished with sentences of major imprisonment of between 10 and 20 years, depending on aggravating circumstances, including participation by several people, the use of firearms, the value of what was stolen and the existence of injured or deceased persons.
The legislation also provides for aggravating factors for those who participate in the planning or execution of group robberies, as well as for those who use vehicles to facilitate the commission of the crime or the escape. Illegal possession of firearms, if confirmed, also constitutes a separate crime punishable by up to 20 years imprisonment, in accordance with the Firearms, Ammunition and Related Materials Control and Regulation Law.
Authorities indicated that the judicial proceedings of the four detained men will continue under the supervision of the Public Ministry, which will deepen the investigation to determine whether there are links to other criminal acts.
