Police capture four jewellery shop robbers in Santiago and recover all stolen goods

The National Police detained four alleged criminals accused of robbing a jewellery shop in central Santiago, according to a report by ultimominuto.net on Tuesday. Officers recovered all the money, stolen jewellery and the weapon allegedly used during the robbery.

The regional director of the Central Cibao National Police, General Jesús Tejada Tejada, stated that the detainees travelled from San Francisco de Macorís to carry out the assault. They used hoods, gloves and a jeep with a false licence plate to hinder their identification, which, according to authorities, indicates prior planning of the crime.

The arrested individuals were identified as Marcos José García de la Cruz, Andy José Castillo Jiménez, Delvinson Luis Restituyo Mejía and Heber Isaac Burgos García.

The rapid response of preventive officers and the Central Investigation Directorate (Dicrim) made it possible to locate the vehicle in the Gurabo sector, shortly after the robbery was committed. During the pursuit, one of those involved threw a firearm to dispose of evidence, although officers managed to recover it.

In the operation, RD$36,150 in cash was seized, two US dollars, 4,895 grammes of silver, four silver earrings, four mobile telephones, gloves, balaclavas and a pistol without legal documentation. The jeep used was rented and was circulating with a licence plate that belonged to another vehicle.

The robbery victim presented herself at the police headquarters and confirmed that both the jewellery and money recovered corresponded entirely to the stolen goods, so the haul was returned one hundred per cent.

The authorities are also investigating the involvement of the four detainees in another robbery registered on Friday night in the municipality of Navarrete, where several victims allegedly identified them as those responsible.

The arrested individuals will be placed at the disposal of the Public Prosecutor's Office, while investigations continue to determine whether the alleged gang is linked to other criminal acts in the northern region of the country.
