An apparent jealous dispute triggered a double homicide on the evening of Friday 23 October at a shop located on Roca Cueva street, kilometre 12 of the Los Frailes sector in Santo Domingo Este, according to eldia.com.do.
The alleged perpetrator is said to be a captain in the Dominican Air Force, who allegedly shot two men who were with him at the establishment.
According to preliminary versions still unconfirmed, the conflict arose when one of his companions invited a woman present at the venue to dance. The gesture allegedly infuriated the supposed military officer, who maintained a close relationship with her, triggering a heated argument.
The tension escalated until the man drew a firearm. During a struggle, he fatally shot the individual who made the invitation and also shot a second companion, who allegedly attempted to disarm him to prevent the tragedy.
The authorities who attended the scene were unable to immediately confirm the official identity of the victims.
Jackson Mercedes, president of the Human Rights organisation of Santo Domingo Este, demanded a thorough and transparent investigation. Mercedes lamented that a situation of jealousy ended with the loss of two lives and urged the authorities to clarify what happened to ensure justice.
The National Police confirmed the double homicide and immediately took charge of the investigation. Officers are working to establish responsibility and officially validate the military officer's involvement in the crime.
