Two men arrested after killing of young Canadian in Puerto Plata
Two individuals were arrested by Dominican authorities in connection with the fatal shooting of a 19-year-old Canadian teenager in Puerto Plata, the National Police reported.
The deceased was identified as Tristan Primeau-Poitras, who was travelling through the area accompanied by another person on 23 March when he was attacked. According to investigators, the incident occurred during an assault that resulted in shots fired by the attackers.
The arrested individuals are named Jordi Yúnior Severiano and Rangel Merete Rodríguez. Both were captured shortly after the incident and remain in police custody. During the detention procedure, officers seized suspected marijuana and a sum of cash.
The young man who died was from Ste-Julienne, a municipality located approximately 70 kilometres north of Montreal, according to confirmation from municipal officials of that Canadian town through a statement on social media. In the message, the authorities expressed their condolences to the young man's relatives and highlighted the sorrow of the community.
Close friends also paid tribute to Primeau-Poitras on digital platforms. One of them described him as an authentic person whose presence illuminated those around him, lamenting a loss that occurred in circumstances he characterised as unjust and incomprehensible.
The case remains under investigation and it is expected that the detained individuals will face formal charges in the upcoming stages of the judicial process.
