Former police officer sentenced to 30 years for murdering partner and mother-in-law in La Vega

A court found former second lieutenant of the National Police Juan Luis Jiménez guilty of the shooting deaths of his partner, Meylin Ariany Marte Rodríguez, and his mother-in-law, Marisela Rodríguez Marte, and imposed a sentence of 30 years in prison. The convicted man will serve his sentence in a correctional facility in San Francisco de Macorís, in accordance with the terms of the sentence handed down on Tuesday.
Chronology of the attack
On the morning of 18 January, Meylin Ariany Marte called her mother to come and pick her up, alleging that she was a victim of violence by Jiménez. Marisela Rodríguez took her daughter to her residence, located in the Los Robles sector of the municipality of La Vega.
That same night, around 10:00 pm, the then officer arrived at the house in a vehicle that, according to what the Public Ministry established, he had borrowed in order not to be identified. Jiménez jumped the perimeter fence, gained access through the back of the house and entered the bedroom where his partner was, whom he shot multiple times.
Upon leaving the room, he also attacked Marisela Rodríguez with several shots that caused her death on the spot. During the attack, Franklin Ruiz Inoa, a domestic employee of the family, was wounded after being shot and managed to escape with his life.
Flight, capture and proceedings
After committing the acts, Jiménez fled the scene and remained at large for several days. His capture came after an operation that included 31 raids, as well as the use of helicopters, drones and intelligence work.
A La Vega court subsequently imposed one year of pre-trial detention as a coercive measure whilst the Public Ministry processed him on charges of murder, gender-based violence, aggravated domestic violence and violation of Law 631-16 on Firearms, Ammunition and Related Materials.
Community shock
The case generated a strong reaction in La Vega, where family members and community members demanded justice for the deaths of both women. With the court's decision, Jiménez was found guilty of the double homicide and the 30-year sentence was confirmed.
