Man charged in Barahona shootout surrenders at capital police headquarters

Axel Naviosky Ferreras, alias "Cutico", 19, surrendered on Tuesday afternoon at the central headquarters of the National Police in Santo Domingo, according to diariolibre.com. The young man was sought for his alleged participation in a gun battle with a police patrol on Luperón avenue in Barahona, an incident in which a police officer and another young man were wounded.

The surrender occurred after his lawyers reported that since Monday they had been attempting to present Ferreras to the authorities in Barahona without receiving a response. According to the defence, the authorities initially demanded that the young man present himself with the weapon allegedly used during the confrontation, a possession the defendant denies.

The legal representatives also argued that there was no formal arrest warrant, although the Police later issued a search notice with judicial order number 2026AJ001256 and an alert labelling him as "highly dangerous".

The intervention of journalist Nuria Piera proved key to facilitating the surrender. According to the defendant's lawyers, Piera acted as a liaison so that Ferreras would be received at the Santo Domingo headquarters with guarantees for his physical integrity and respect for due process.

During the incident on Sunday night, police officer Erasmy Moreta was wounded. Wilmer Lara Féliz, who was accompanying Ferreras on a motorcycle, sustained bullet wounds and remains in police custody at a health centre in Barahona.

This is the second recent case in that province in which the authorities allegedly refused to receive young men sought by the Police. On 22 September a similar situation occurred with two residents of the Camboya sector, who were finally received after relocating to Santo Domingo.
