During recent days, security bodies of the Caribbean nation carried out three joint actions against drug trafficking. The interventions, planned by the National Drug Control Directorate together with the National Police and the Public Ministry, were executed in strategic zones of the territory and yielded significant results in terms of seizures and arrests.
The first raid took place in a rural zone of the municipality of Santo Domingo Oeste, specifically in the area known as La Cuaba. There, specialised personnel discovered a clandestine greenhouse where hundreds of cannabis plants were being cultivated. The operation resulted in the seizure of 421 plants at various stages of development, arranged in synthetic material containers. Additionally, agricultural tools and an irrigation system comprising water tanks, hoses, sprayers and a solar collector were confiscated. A single suspect was taken into custody and handed over to prosecutors for corresponding legal proceedings. The plant material was sent to the National Institute of Forensic Sciences for analysis and quantification.
In parallel, a second operation was conducted in Atlantic Ocean waters near the locality of Baní, in Peravia Province. Through a device that integrated aerial, naval and land assets, teams succeeded in intercepting a high-speed vessel transporting a considerable cargo. On board, they found nearly two thousand packages of illicit substances: the majority corresponded to dried herb, whilst a smaller proportion contained white powder. The packages bore distinctive seals and were wrapped in adhesive material. Two local citizens were detained in flagrante delicto and placed at the disposal of justice. Investigations point towards dismantling the logistical chain that allegedly brought the merchandise from South American countries via irregular maritime routes.
The third action took place at the country's principal airport, Internacional de Las Américas. Agents from the anti-drug body and the aeronautic security service set up an observation post in the food services area following alerts about a possible drug shipment. They ultimately intercepted five containers harbouring 90 individual packages of powder believed to be cocaine. The authorities do not rule out that the intention was to conceal the cargo in some compartment of an aircraft bound for North America or the European continent. In this operation, eleven people were arrested, some of whom could face formal charges whilst others continue to be interrogated to clarify their participation.
The packages secured at the air terminal were also transferred to the official forensic laboratory to determine their chemical composition and net weight.
These interventions are part of an upward trend in seizures during the current year. Government statistics indicate that in 2026 alone, more than 23 tonnes of narcotics have been retained at various points across the national territory, many of them linked to vessels from the South American coast.
