The National Police activated on Saturday the search for Wilkin García Peguero, known as "Mantequilla", investigated for criminal association, aggravated attempted murder, voluntary assault and battery, and fraud, according to diariolibre.com.
The Judicial Office of Permanent Care Services in Monte Plata issued an arrest warrant against García Peguero in connection with the case of citizen Yeison Mata Albuey. The institution urged the wanted person to turn himself in by whatever means he deems appropriate.
The National Police also requested that the public supply any information that could contribute to his location through the Central Investigation Directorate (DICRIM) or the nearest police station.
García Peguero gained prominence in 2022, when hundreds of people flocked to his business attracted by the promise of doubling their invested money in a short time. During that period he was perceived as a local benefactor: he paid for medicines, supported families in need, and financed studies, which led many to consider him more effective than traditional authorities.
The narrative began to unravel when the system stopped paying out and complaints multiplied. What his followers defended as an "innovative" business was classified by the courts as a pyramid scheme.
In March 2024, a court sentenced him to two years suspended imprisonment after finding him guilty of fraud through abuse of trust, and ordered him to return money to dozens of victims. The new legal proceedings arise with charges of greater severity, including aggravated attempted murder.
