The Dominican Republic and the Kingdom of Belgium have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to strengthen cooperation between their customs administrations in the prevention, investigation and combat of illicit drug trafficking and transnational organised crime, according to acento.com.do.
The agreement was signed by Nelson Arroyo, director general of Customs of the Dominican Republic, and Kristian Vanderwaeren, general administrator of Customs and Special Taxes of Belgium.
The memorandum establishes a cooperation framework that includes the exchange of information, intelligence and experiences between both institutions, as well as the strengthening of early warning mechanisms and joint risk analysis.
The agreement also includes the exchange of information on methods used by criminal networks, the coordination of positions within the World Customs Organization and the carrying out of coordinated operations between the competent authorities of both countries.
The authorities specified that the agreement responds to the increased use of commercial routes and ports for illicit drug trafficking, with emphasis on greater collaboration between the ports of Antwerp and Multimodal Caucedo.
This is the third security cooperation agreement signed between both nations during 2026. In April, the Dominican National Police and the Belgian Federal Police signed a cooperation memorandum. On 15 June, the National Drug Control Directorate (DNCD) and Belgium's Public Federal Service for Mobility and Transport agreed on a maritime security cooperation mechanism.
