Officials from the Attorney General's Office and the National Drug Control Directorate, with the assistance of federal agents from the northern country, handed over two local citizens to United States authorities on Saturday who face judicial proceedings in Manhattan, according to eldia.com.do.
Luis Ezequiel Then Martínez and Carlos Pisandro Peña Tejeda — also identified as Bertinio Emilio Peguero or "Papá" — were received by foreign officials at Las Américas International Airport. From there they departed on a commercial aircraft, under escort, bound for United States soil to face the charges pending against them.
Then Martínez, according to order 337-26, must appear before the highest court in the State of New York. He is accused of unlawful assembly in the second degree, acting as a wholesale dealer in narcotics, distribution of controlled substances in the first degree, and criminal possession of drugs in the first and third degrees.
Peña Tejeda, pursuant to order 365-26, is required by a court in the Eastern District of New York. He is charged with conspiracy to introduce into United States territory controlled substances from abroad, an operation in which five hundred grammes or more of a compound containing cocaine were allegedly involved, amongst other charges.
The handover of both men was carried out in accordance with established procedural steps and in adherence to international collaboration agreements that the Dominican State has ratified to combat crime of global scope and the illegal drug trade.
