A National Police officer is charged with voluntary homicide after killing her 10-year-old daughter with an electric sander in Manoguayabo on 18 July.

Senior sergeant of the National Police Glenny Telleria Alberto allegedly used a hand-held electric sander to inflict a fatal wound to the neck of her 10-year-old daughter, in an incident recorded on 18 July, at around 1:30 in the afternoon, in Manoguayabo, municipality of Santo Domingo Oeste. This is reported by eldia.com.do, citing the request for a coercive measure presented by the Public Ministry.
According to the prosecution file, the accused took the tool from within the room where the child was located, plugged it in, placed it over the girl and proceeded to inflict a cutting wound to her neck.
Brother Intervened Upon Hearing Screams
Telleria Alberto's brother, upon hearing the child's screams, entered the room and found his sister allegedly cutting the girl's neck with the sander. He immediately pushed her aside, took the child in his arms and asked her: "Glenny, why did you do that!".
The man transported the child urgently to the Divina Misericordia Medical Centre, where she arrived without vital signs. The death certificate establishes that the cause of death was a cutting wound to the neck consistent with an injury caused by an electric sander.
Accused Hospitalised; Hearing Set for This Tuesday
Following the incident, Telleria Alberto was transferred under police custody to the Central Teaching University Hospital of the Armed Forces, where she remained hospitalised awaiting medical discharge to be presented before the court.
The hearing was set for this Tuesday before a judge of the Judicial Office of Permanent Care Services of Santo Domingo Oeste, where the request for a coercive measure will be considered for the charge of alleged voluntary homicide against her firstborn daughter. In accordance with the Dominican Criminal Code, if found guilty, she could face up to 30 years in prison.
Her defence is being handled by lawyer Jean Carlos Martínez, who upon arriving at the Palace of Justice of Santo Domingo Oeste indicated that he could not make statements until he reviewed the file.
Officer Had Been on Medical Leave Since 2023
Investigations by the Public Ministry also reveal that Telleria Alberto had received treatment for a mental health condition and had been on medical leave since 2023. The National Police confirmed that the officer remained off duty due to that condition at the time of the incident.
Authorities indicated that the accused will remain detained under the custody of the Public Ministry as judicial proceedings continue against her.
