A judicial panel imposed the most severe penalty in Dominican law—three decades of imprisonment—on an individual who killed a woman by strangulation inside a short-stay accommodation facility in Santo Domingo Norte, as reported by the Dominican Republic Attorney General's Office.
The ruling fell upon Juan Bernardo Núñez, also known as Jean Gardy Bernardo, who holds Haitian nationality. The investigation was conducted by prosecutor Ivette Mateo, who documented that the crime occurred on 15 July 2024, when the perpetrator and the victim entered the motel together.
Staff at the establishment noticed that the defendant left the premises alone on his motorcycle, leaving the entrance open. He waited for a departing vehicle to allow him to hide and flee unnoticed. Everything was captured on the business's video surveillance system.
Later, another staff member discovered the woman's body on the bed when entering to check the room.
During the trial phase, the Public Ministry representative Ana Basora presented compelling evidence that established the defendant's guilt, as he violated various articles of the Dominican Penal Code.
The Second Panel Court of Santo Domingo Este, composed of judges Josefina Ubiera Guerrero and Ana Miledys Taveras, along with judge Isaías R. Martínez, determined that the prisoner will serve his sentence at Las Parras penitentiary.
