Puerto Plata Court of Appeal sentences Wander Franco for sexual abuse of minor

An appeals court in the Dominican Republic on Thursday condemned Wander Franco, shortstop for the Tampa Bay Rays, to three years of conditional suspended imprisonment, after finding him criminally responsible for sexual abuse against a minor, according to eldiariony.com.

The Puerto Plata Court of Appeal revoked with this ruling the judicial pardon that had been granted to the player in May, thus restarting the process of legal consequences against him.

According to the case file presented by the Public Ministry, Franco had sexual relations with the victim when she was 14 years old and the athlete was 21. The prosecution had appealed requesting a sentence of five years of ordinary prison detention, but the appeals court opted for the suspended modality of three years. The Judge of Sentence Execution will be the one to set the rules and restrictive measures that Franco must comply with during that period.

In the same ruling, the court upheld in full the ten-year prison sentence imposed on the teenager's mother for the crimes of commercial sexual exploitation and money laundering. Furthermore, it ordered the final seizure of 2,100,000 Dominican pesos—equivalent to approximately 34,000 US dollars—seized during the proceedings of the case.
