Men dressed in police uniforms broke into a rented residence in Olón, an exclusive seaside resort on Ecuador's Pacific coast, and murdered David Macías, 35, brother of the country's most wanted crime boss.
The killing occurred in the early hours of Sunday, according to local authorities. The attackers managed to flee and, to date, no arrests have been made in connection with the case.
David Macías held a position as a regional leader within Los Choneros, the powerful criminal gang that until recently was led by his brother Adolfo Macías, alias "Fito". The latter is currently in the United States awaiting trial after being extradited from Ecuador last year.
Los Choneros has been designated by Washington as a Foreign Terrorist Organisation. United States authorities identify it as one of the groups responsible for the sharp rise in Ecuador's homicide rate.
According to eyewitnesses cited by BBC, the attackers entered the property that Macías had rented in an affluent neighbourhood of the coastal town.
In 2018, David Macías pleaded guilty to criminal conspiracy. During his imprisonment, he allegedly recruited inmates for Los Choneros and consolidated the gang's control over the prison where he was serving his sentence.
The murder represents the latest setback for Los Choneros following the capture of Adolfo Macías the previous year and the detention of another brother, Javier, in Colombia last month.
