Woman shot dead near midnight in centre of Guayaquil

Johanna Benítez Vargas, 34, was murdered by gunshots at the intersection of Luis Urdaneta and Rumichaca streets in the centre of Guayaquil, around midnight on Friday 31 July, according to extra.ec.

The victim, who had no criminal record according to police data, received several shots that caused her death immediately. At this time, the identity and characteristics of those involved remain unknown, as well as whether they were travelling by motorbike or car.

Local residents indicated that Benítez Vargas regularly worked in that central area of the city, in a commercial establishment, which is why she was frequently seen in the location.

The National Police are seeking to determine what the woman was doing moments before the attack. Among the hypotheses being considered is that she could have been taking a telephone call or waiting for transport, although both circumstances have not yet been confirmed by the authorities.

According to internet records cited by extra.ec, the citizen held a Rimpe—Simplified Regime for Entrepreneurs and Popular Businesses in Ecuador—linked to activities such as shoe shining, vehicle care and parking.

The causes of the murder remain under investigation, as does the identification of those responsible for the attack.
