Spain's National Court has filed charges against the two daughters of former Government president José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, according to information released by the judicial institution itself. The accusations are part of an investigation into alleged corruption and influence-peddling that affects the historical leader of the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party.
According to a statement from the National Court, investigating judge José Luis Calama made the decision to charge the daughters and the former leader's secretary following a formal request from the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office submitted on Tuesday. The magistrate determined that there were sufficient grounds to elevate the three women to the status of investigated persons.
Zapatero appeared before judge Calama to give a statement and flatly denied all accusations against him. The former head of government, an emblematic figure of the Spanish left, faces suspicion of having headed an organised structure dedicated to obtaining illegal commissions through several commercial companies.
The investigation suggests that the former president acted as the head of an established and permanently organised mechanism for the unlawful exercise of influence, whose objective was to divert payments through multiple commercial entities used as instruments for channelling funds.
Zapatero's daughters appear as administrators of one of these companies, called Whathefav. This company, according to the judicial investigation, would be linked to the network of firms that constitutes the main subject of the investigation into alleged corruption offences.
