Teenager charged with murder appeared in court with face covered in Lahti
According to Yle.fi, a young man from Iitti faced charges of murder today in Päijät-Häme District Court. He is suspected of killing a 52-year-old man in Iitti in August 2025.
According to the charge, the defendant struck the victim in the head with a drinking glass, knocked him down and strangled him. He then subjected the victim to violence with sharp objects. The cause of death has been confirmed as a stab wound and the resulting loss of blood.
The prosecutor considers the homicide to have been committed in an exceptionally brutal and cruel manner. In assessing the act, the prosecutor has taken into account its unexpected nature as well as the fact that the violence occurred in the victim's home, a place protected by the sanctity of the home.
The prosecutor is seeking an unconditional prison sentence of 10–11 years for the defendant.
The indictment application mentions that the victim and the defendant were together in a bar before the act. Surveillance camera footage is presented as evidence of the bar visit. No possible motive is mentioned in the indictment application.
The defendant was 15 years old at the time of the act and turned 16 shortly after his remand in custody. Because he is being charged as a young person, a life sentence is not possible, and the maximum length of punishment is shorter than for adults.
The defendant entered the courtroom with his face covered by a hoodie and face mask. The District Court has closed the main hearing to the public because the respondent is a minor and the proceedings address sensitive information concerning private life. Three hearing days have been allocated for the case.
Police initially suspected the case to be manslaughter, but the criminal classification was later changed to murder. The victim's spouse called for help, and the emergency services determined that the man had died from injuries sustained by violence. The suspect was arrested in Lahti the day after the act and remanded in custody a few days later. Kausala in Iitti is located between Lahti and Kouvola in Päijät-Häme.
