Pirkanmaa District Court has handed down a three-year and eight-month prison sentence to a 19-year-old man. The criminal charges concerned an attempted homicide that occurred during the March weekend in Tampere city centre.

The crime scene was outside a restaurant near Keskustori. The accused struck the victim in the face and stabbed him in the side with a knife. The court found that the man knew or at least considered it probable that use of the blade could have cost the victim his life.

The sentenced man must pay the victim almost 6,000 euros in compensation. This includes compensation for mental suffering, pain and permanent cosmetic injury.

The man denied the charges and claimed he had not used the weapon himself. According to his account, the knife had come into his possession only after the stabbings, and he had tried to get rid of it by throwing it in a bin. The court did not accept this explanation.

In the same case, another man, 18 years old, received a fine for assault. He also participated in striking the victim in the face.

The man who received the sentence has a previous criminal record for violent offences. He has previously been convicted of, for example, aggravated robbery and aggravated unlawful confinement.

Police have not publicly disclosed the motive for the attack or how the parties knew each other. It is possible to appeal against the sentence.
