The District Court of West Uusimaa sentenced a man to life imprisonment for the murder of his ex-wife in Espoo Henttaa. The pregnant woman was shot in the stairwell of an apartment building whilst her children were present.

A man was sentenced to life imprisonment after killing his former spouse in Espoo Henttaa in August last year. The District Court of West Uusimaa convicted Engin Gezer of murder and unlawful possession of a firearm, according to Yle.
According to the court, the motivation behind the act was the convicted man's attempt to protect his family's honour and to control a woman who was expecting a child with another man.
The events began when the man followed his ex-wife to her home. The couple got into an argument, and the woman said she intended to call the police. She went into the stairwell, where she stumbled and fell.
The convicted man ran after her. He first fired two shots through the glass of the external door. He then shot the woman three times in the back whilst she was lying on the ground.
The couple's shared children witnessed their father's actions. The woman died from her injuries in the stairwell. Police arrested the perpetrator immediately at the scene.
Gezer's request for a mental health examination was rejected. His accomplice Fesih Basinc received an unconditional sentence of three years for aiding and abetting murder and a firearms offence.
The decision is not yet final and may be appealed to the court of appeal.
