Finland's largest investment fraud: €25 million taken from individual via forged platform
Finnish police are investigating an exceptional financial crime in which a private individual lost as much as €25 million to fraudsters. The money was taken via a forged investment platform, and according to authorities, it is the largest known investment fraud in the country's history.
The perpetrator made contact with the victim through social media channels, posing as an investment adviser, according to Postimees, citing information from Helsingin Sanomat. The victim was promised significant returns by investing in cryptocurrencies. Trust was built gradually, and initially the victim was even able to withdraw some of their funds, creating the impression of a reliable service.
Later, the victim deposited increasingly larger sums, but ultimately lost access to their account and could no longer reach the service provider. According to police suspicion, the entire investment platform was originally set up as a fraud tool.
Sakari Tuominen, senior detective inspector at the Central Criminal Police, describes the case as a classic investment fraud scheme. It exploits the high volatility of cryptocurrency markets and promises rapid profits. The investigation is proceeding with international cooperation, and police hope that publicity will help prevent future frauds.
