Lappeenranta minor suspected of distributing deepfake nude images

South-Eastern Finland Police is investigating a case in which a minor boy is suspected of distributing AI-generated nude images of numerous young girls, Yle News reported.

According to investigation leader Pia Katajala, there are dozens of victims, even over a hundred. Dozens of crime reports have been filed with police regarding the case.

The suspected crime's victims are minors. According to Iltalehti's information, the group includes both girls previously known to the boy and online acquaintances. According to Katajala, all known victims are from the Lappeenranta area – as is the suspected perpetrator himself.

The preliminary investigation is at an early stage, and police have not yet reached all parties involved in the case. At present, the crime is being investigated under the charge of distributing an image depicting a child in a sexual manner in relation to minors. The investigation charge may change as the investigation progresses. In the case of possible adult victims, unauthorised distribution of sexual images is applied.

The case is the first deepfake investigation for South-Eastern Finland Police's child crime investigation unit. Katajala states that it was only a matter of time before such a crime would reach the unit's investigation.
