Life sentence for Tuusula sledge murder – Juuso Lehtonen convicted of torturing and killing woman
The District Court of East Uusimaa has sentenced 34-year-old Juuso Lehtonen to life imprisonment for the murder of a woman in Tuusula in October 2024.
Life sentence for Tuusula sledge murder – victim tortured for days
The District Court of East Uusimaa has sentenced 34-year-old Juuso Sakari Lehtonen to life imprisonment for the murder of an approximately 40-year-old woman in Tuusula. According to Yle News, the sentence was handed down today and concerns crimes that took place in October 2024.
According to the District Court, Lehtonen held the victim in his flat on Askolintie against her will and tortured her with various forms of violence over several days. The woman died between 27 and 29 October 2024. The court found the act to have been committed with careful premeditation and in an exceptionally cruel and brutal manner, which is why the crime was classified as murder.
Lehtonen had suspected the victim of stealing a batch of amphetamine from him and demanded that she come to his flat on 18 October. According to the sentence, he had planned the violence before the victim's arrival. Once in the flat, he bound the woman to structures with air conditioning tape, strangled, beat and kicked her, and cut and stabbed her with a blade weapon several times over several days. The violence did not end even though no drugs were found.
Lehtonen dismembered the woman's body and transported the body parts in packages in three batches to Kolsanlammensuo in Jokelan, where he submerged or attempted to submerge them in early November 2024. The case came to public attention when police released an image of a blue sledge that the man had used to transport the body parts.
In addition to murder, Lehtonen was convicted of serious unlawful imprisonment, serious theft, desecration of a grave, payment card fraud and serious drug offences. In a mental health assessment, the National Institute for Health and Welfare found him to have been criminally responsible at the time of the acts, and the District Court accepted this assessment.
Part of the victim's body parts were found on 16 November and the remainder within approximately a week.
The court also sentenced a 38-year-old man, who received a six-month suspended sentence for serious theft. He had visited the victim's flat in Hyvinkää together with Lehtonen on 19 October and stolen property from there whilst the woman was being held captive in Lehtonen's flat.
Lehtonen was ordered to pay the victim's mother and two brothers 17,500 euros each in compensation for suffering, and to reimburse funeral expenses and other costs totalling more than 15,000 euros.
