Man from Vaasa arrested for two murders – deliberate collision and fire in Laihia and Vaasa
A 27-year-old man from Vaasa is suspected of two murders, two attempted murders and aggravated destruction of property. The incidents occurred on Saturday 29 August in Laihia and Vaasa.
Man from Vaasa remanded in custody for two murders – police investigate collision and fire
The District Court of Ostrobothnia remanded a 27-year-old man from Vaasa into custody on Monday afternoon, suspected of two murders, two attempted murders, aggravated destruction of property and aggravated endangerment of traffic safety. According to Iltalehti, the suspect has no criminal record in the past ten years.
The events began on Saturday 29 August at around 4.25 a.m. when police received a report of a serious collision between two private cars on Vaasantie in Laihia. Police suspect the man deliberately steered his car in front of an oncoming vehicle. The driver of the oncoming vehicle died in the collision, and two passengers in the car were injured. Additionally, a third private car was damaged and its driver was slightly injured.
Police are investigating the driver's death as murder and the incidents involving the passengers as two attempted murders.
The Laihia incident was preceded by another serious case in Palosaar in Vaasa. A police patrol went to inspect a flat in a block of flats whose door was found to be extremely hot and the flat filled with smoke. Police alerted the rescue service and began evacuating other residents from the building. The rescue service extinguished the flat fire, and a dead woman was found in the flat.
Based on preliminary investigation, police suspect the woman was the victim of a homicide and that the fire was deliberately set. According to police information, the woman and the suspected man had a relationship, and police have no information of previous reports of domestic violence between them.
The suspect has clarified the course of events during interrogation. Police are continuing to investigate the exact sequence of the incidents, the motive and the entirety of the criminal conduct. Iltalehti reports that the suspect is very active on social media, where he frequently comments on current issues in a sharp manner.
