Vaasa woman suspected of killing boyfriend by strangling – preliminary investigation complete
A 26-year-old woman is in custody on suspicion of murder in connection with a death that occurred in Vaasa's Palosaar district last November. The preliminary investigation has been completed and the case has been referred to the prosecutor.
Man found dead in Vaasa's Palosaar district – woman remains suspect
The Ostrobothnia Police Department has concluded its preliminary investigation into a death that occurred in Vaasa's Palosaar district in November of last year, Yle News reported.
A 37-year-old man was found dead in his own flat in Palosaar on 28 November 2025. He was discovered by a close relative. According to police, based on marks observed on the deceased's body, it was estimated that the man had been dead in his flat for several days already.
The case was initially investigated as an inquiry into cause of death. As the investigation progressed, it emerged that property belonging to the man was missing from the flat and his personal vehicle had disappeared. In connection with this, police launched a preliminary investigation into suspected theft offences, and suspicion was directed at the man's female partner from that point.
In December 2025, police conducted a search of the suspect's flat in Tampere. Property belonging to the man was found in the search, and the missing personal vehicle was later discovered near the flat.
According to police, a dispute arose between the man and woman on 19 November 2025 in the man's flat in Palosaar. The woman is suspected of strangling the man on that occasion, as a result of which he died. No emergency services were called to the scene. The woman is suspected of leaving the flat and taking the man's property and vehicle with her.
– Based on the information available in the initial stages, the case was investigated as an inquiry into cause of death. New information that emerged during the investigation led to the events being investigated as a suspected homicide, said investigating officer, detective inspector Mikko Uusimäki.
Uusimäki added that the overall picture of events was gradually constructed on the basis of several different investigative measures. Police had already conducted several preliminary investigations during 2024–2025 into suspected domestic violence offences between the parties.
The 26-year-old woman was taken into custody on suspicion of murder in May. The preliminary investigation has now been completed and the case has been referred to the prosecutor for consideration of charges. Charges must be brought by 10 September 2026 at the latest.
