One dead in Laihia collision – police suspect the act was murder
Ostrobothnia police suspect a 27-year-old man from Vaasa of two murders, two attempted murders, aggravated destruction of property and aggravated endangerment of traffic safety, Ilta-Sanomat reported on Monday.
One of the suspected homicides occurred on Vaasantie in Laihia on Saturday morning at 4.25 a.m., when the suspect drove head-on into an oncoming passenger car. The driver of the accident vehicle died and two other passengers were injured, some seriously. The investigating officer, detective superintendent Mia Uunila, states that all those in the oncoming car were adults.
– The understanding is that the accident vehicle was selected at random, Uunila says.
The suspect fled the scene of the accident, and police apprehended him a few kilometres away from a residential area based on a report from a bystander. The man had told local residents that he had been in an accident and asked them for help.
Female victim found in apartment building
The second suspected homicide occurred in an apartment building flat in Palosaarni, Vaasa. According to Uunila, the suspect himself told police to events in that apartment preceding the collision.
According to police suspicions, the man set a fire in the apartment, where a female victim was found. When a patrol arrived at the scene, the apartment door was extremely hot and the flat was filled with smoke. Police did not enter the apartment, but instead called the fire service to the scene and began evacuating other residents of the apartment building.
Uunila does not specify the cause of the woman's death or the cause of the apartment fire.
The relationship was "quite recent"
According to Uunila, the 27-year-old suspect and the deceased woman were in some form of relationship with each other.
– According to police understanding, this was a very new relationship. They did not live together, Uunila adds.
The man has no criminal background at least in the past ten years, and his domicile has no criminal cases older than this on file at the district court. According to Uunila, the suspect has cooperated with police in clarifying events. Uunila does not comment on whether the man has admitted to the acts.
The suspect has been active on social media and published several videos in which he has shared his opinions on various subjects.
