According to Lapinkansa.fi, five people have been killed in a major building fire in Vantaa's Pähkinärinne. East Uusimaa police confirmed the information and said they had taken one person into custody on suspicion of deliberately setting the fire.

The rescue service received an alert about a medium-sized building fire shortly after half past five on Tuesday morning. The fire was extinguished, but rescue operations were still ongoing.

Police cordoned off the area and asked residents to avoid moving in the fire area. According to the authorities, the situation posed no danger to the public. The scene included several units from the rescue service, emergency medical services and police.

The Safety Investigation Authority (Otkes) reported that it had received a duty notification of the fire at nine o'clock in the morning. Otkes communications director Tiina Bieber told STT that Otkes is investigating the case.

"We are investigating. We cannot say anything more at this point," Bieber said.

Otkes' on-site investigation had not yet begun at nine o'clock in the morning at the fire scene. Police have so far refused to comment on the fire in more detail.
