The 11-year-old schoolgirl was found dead a week after being reported missing. The man suspected of abducting and killing her, Jérôme Barella, was already known to law enforcement. Several reports and complaints regarding sexual conduct towards children had been filed against him, without any interrogation summons being sent.
On Wednesday 10 June, General Hubert Bonneau, head of the gendarmerie, used the word "failure" to describe the handling of this case. He was questioned on franceinfo regarding the 2025 complaint against Barella, which remained unaddressed.
An internal administrative procedure has been launched to shed light on these shortcomings. The General ruled out the hypothesis of a deficit in material or human resources. According to his own words, the difficulty lay in the speed of execution and the promptitude with which the case should have been handled.
