A 16-year-old adolescent and a 15-year-old adolescent have been charged and imprisoned as part of the investigation into the death of Théo, an 11-year-old boy found dead by strangulation on Sunday in Rennes. Prosecutor Frédéric Teillet confirmed this information on Wednesday 27 May, specifying via franceinfo that the two suspects face a maximum sentence of twenty years' imprisonment for this crime committed by minors.
During their police custody, the two young people admitted to acting out of revenge against their victim and with the aim of appropriating fishing equipment valued at a few dozen euros. The charges brought include "murder of a minor" and "theft in a group", the prosecutor stated on Wednesday evening.
The child's body had been found on Sunday at around five o'clock in the evening in a wooded area on the banks of the Vilaine, near Rennes city centre. The post-mortem examination confirmed that death resulted from strangulation.
Whilst murder aggravated by the victim's status as a minor is theoretically punishable by life imprisonment, the sentence is limited to twenty years when the perpetrators are themselves minors, the public ministry representative recalled.
