Fyssas murder: 13 years on, thousands at memorial events
Thousands of citizens participated in a memorial concert for anti-fascist musician Pavlos Fyssas, who was murdered 13 years ago by Georgos Roupakias, a member of the neo-Nazi organisation Golden Dawn, according to megatv.com.
His mother, Magda Fyssas, visibly moved, delivered a message against fascism and thanked those standing by the family in honouring the memory of her son.
The murder of Fyssas by Roupakias awakened society and the political world and opened the way for the conviction of Golden Dawn as a criminal organisation. On 7 October 2020, presiding judge Maria Lepeniotis announced the verdict in the appeals court — a moment that sealed the family's seven-year struggle.
This year's events took place in the shadow of the recent release of Ilias Kasidiaris, who was freed from Domokos prison a few days earlier. Dozens of anti-fascist gatherings and marches were organised across the country.
Roupakias, convicted of life imprisonment, remains in prison. Also there is Giannis Lagos, who is serving a sentence of 13 years for directing a criminal organisation, as well as Eleni Zaroulia, who was taken to Elaionia prison in Thebes following the issue of the second-instance ruling.
