Remand in custody in the NGO 'Children's Playground' fraud case in Thessaloniki
The 35-year-old wife of the founder of the NGO 'Children's Playground' was ruled to be remanded in custody, according to In.gr, following her testimony before the 1st Examining Magistrate of Thessaloniki that lasted less than two hours.
The defendant denied the charges and attributed responsibility to her 37-year-old husband, president of the NGO, claiming that he, addicted to gambling, spent the money that was embezzled from the collections.
"The amount of money missing from the collections is not that much. And my ex-husband took it and gambled it away, he is addicted. I apologise. We did not have a luxurious life, the moments that are being displayed do not correspond to reality. We live in a house in Toumba of 68 square metres with rent. There was no complaint from any family, the needs of all the families for which collections were made were satisfied," she stated among other things during her testimony.
The amount of the embezzlement, according to her, does not exceed €900,000. When asked about the absence of permits for the collections, she argued that this practice is common in such types of organisations.
Along with the 35-year-old, her 32-year-old brother and two other individuals connected with the NGO's activities testified today. All three were released free with restrictive conditions.
The 37-year-old president of the NGO 'Children's Playground' is expected to testify next Thursday, 5 November.
