Remand in custody of 36-year-old for father's murder in Serres
A unanimous decision by the investigating magistrate and prosecutor has led to the remand in custody of a 36-year-old man accused of the murder of his 67-year-old father in Serres, according to In.gr. The accused faces charges of intentional homicide against a family member in a calm mental state, as well as illegal possession of a firearm and unauthorized carrying of a weapon.
During his statement, the 36-year-old maintained his innocence. His lawyer, Giannis Giantsios, stated that witness examination would continue and that a psychiatric examination of the accused would be conducted.
Contradictions and security camera footage
Security camera footage played a decisive role in the decision to remand the man in custody. The footage shows the 36-year-old visiting his father on Thursday at 19:23 and remaining there for 17 minutes — whereas he claimed he had visited at 02:30 after midnight. Lawyer Giantsios submitted a memorandum regarding his client's medication, arguing that it may explain the memory gaps he is exhibiting.
From death from "natural causes" to homicide case
The case began on 1 August, when the 36-year-old himself found his father dead in the ground-floor residence. Initially, the death was attributed to pathological causes, but an autopsy reversed the findings: the 67-year-old died from internal bleeding caused by severe blows, resulting in the investigation being converted into a homicide case.
In the months that followed, the 36-year-old repeatedly appeared in the media — including in an interview with ERT — asking for the perpetrator of his father's murder to be found. Contradictions in his statements, combined with evidence and security camera footage, ultimately led the authorities to issue an arrest warrant against him.
Legal remedies and family history
According to information, the relationship between father and son was characterised by frequent conflicts, whilst in the past complaints had been recorded regarding incidents of domestic violence. The accused's mother testified in his favour, presenting photographs to the investigating magistrate of father and son celebrating together. The investigating magistrate and prosecutor, assessing the gravity of the evidence, ordered his detention in a correctional facility pending trial.
