Arrest in Patissia for double murder in Loutraki — weapons found
The man accused of the double murder in Loutraki, Corinthia in 2020 is now in the hands of the Greek police (EL.AS). According to Ethnos, he is a 43-year-old of Albanian origin, who was arrested in a flat in the Kato Patissia area.
The arrest operation was carried out following the exploitation of information, with the assistance of EKAM and in the presence of a judicial official. The man was immobilised before he could react. He was using forged documents and avoided travel.
Pistol and hand grenades in the flat
During a search of the flat, police officers found an armed pistol and two hand grenades. The authorities are investigating the origin of the weapons, as well as information suggesting that the arrested man may have been planning a new attack.
Charges have been brought against him for violence against officials and judicial officers, forgery, violations of weapons legislation and alien legislation. Outstanding convictions were also pending for premeditated murder, serial robbery and destruction of someone else's property by fire.
A 41-year-old woman was also arrested on charges of harbouring a criminal and violation of alien legislation. Both arrested individuals were taken to the competent prosecuting authority.
The night of the crime in Loutraki
The double murder was committed on the night of 10 to 11 October 2020 in a rural house in Loutraki, Corinthia. The victims were a 43-year-old woman of Ukrainian origin and a 42-year-old pharmacist. Both had been struck fatally with an axe.
From the outset, investigations focused on the woman's immediate circle, as the arrested man is said to have been her former partner. After the attack, the perpetrator is said to have taken money and jewellery from the victims. Subsequently, according to the same information, he transported and set fire to the woman's car in an isolated location, in an apparent attempt to destroy evidence.
The 43-year-old was found dead in the house following a search, with her partner's body beside her. The brutality of the attack had led police early on to consider personal motives.
The trail went cold — until Patissia
After the double murder, the trail of the accused went cold. The authorities even examined the possibility that he had left the country, whilst the case remained open for more than four years.
As part of international police cooperation, the Greek police contacted Albanian authorities through Interpol. From this correspondence it emerged that an international arrest warrant was also outstanding against him from Albania for attempted armed robbery in concert.
Police also report that the arrested man had previously come to the attention of authorities for drug offences, robbery, violations of weapons legislation, traffic law and gambling legislation.
Investigations continue
The authorities are continuing investigations both into the movements of the accused whilst he remained at large, and into the findings in the Patissia flat. A central question remains whether the weapons found are connected to planning a new attack, according to the information being examined.
