Serres: arrest of son for father's murder following revelations from "Light in the Tunnel"
According to In.gr, the 36-year-old son of a 68-year-old man found dead in his home in Serres on 1 August has been arrested on the basis of an arrest warrant issued against him.
The man's body was discovered by his own son. Initially, there were no external injuries on the body nor signs of forced entry to the home, a fact that left open the possibility of sudden death. However, the forensic examination revealed a different picture: the 68-year-old had internal injuries to the abdominal area, possibly from a hammer or crowbar.
Contradictions on air
The case took on new dimensions through the MEGA television programme "Light in the Tunnel", with Angeliki Nikolouli speaking repeatedly with the 36-year-old. In an interview on Friday 30 October, the journalist pointed out a contradiction between his account of his first visit to his father's home and footage from security cameras.
"Because I have been facing health problems for so many years, I have some gaps in my memory. I do some things and then forget them. I remember that I went Thursday evening, on 30 July. I don't remember anything else. Since the camera shows me earlier though, I definitely went. It just escapes me," said the 36-year-old.
The evidence that determined the investigation
From the outset of the case, authorities examined the relationship between father and son, as tensions and friction between them were known. During the investigation, witness statements were evaluated, video footage from security cameras in the area, and findings from forensic laboratories. DNA analysis, fingerprints and biological material constitute the central pieces of evidence in the investigation.
The case, which was initially treated as a possible natural death, is now on an entirely different course, with judicial developments progressing at a rapid pace.
