Telephone fraud against elderly woman in Kavala – one arrested, four wanted
A Greek national was arrested in Kavala as a recipient of money and valuables that were obtained from an elderly woman through telephone fraud. Four additional accomplices are being sought.
Arrest for telephone fraud against elderly woman – police investigation pretext
Police from the Public Safety Unit of the Department for the Investigation and Detection of Crimes in Kavala arrested a Greek national accused of telephone fraud against an elderly woman in the city. According to Dikastiko.gr, the case file that was formed includes four additional unknown accomplices, who remain at large.
The plan in three stages
The perpetrators employed a method of multiple telephone contacts. In the first stage, an unknown female perpetrator contacted the elderly woman, impersonating a relative and claiming she had been injured, requesting money.
In a second contact, another unknown perpetrator threatened the woman regarding her physical safety, demanding the surrender of money and valuables. However, at this stage the perpetrators failed to convince the victim.
In the third stage, a new unknown female perpetrator presented herself by telephone as a police officer. She called the elderly woman to "cooperate" in order to arrest the alleged fraudsters and to surrender money and valuables to an accomplice of the group, who travelled by vehicle to a predetermined location to collect them.
Immediate police operation
Following the report of the incident, police from the Public Safety Unit conducted a coordinated operation and located the arrested individual on the evening of the same day at the predetermined location, immediately after the victim handed over the money and valuables.
Part of the sum of money that had been removed was found in his possession, which was seized and returned to the rightful owner.
Before the prosecutor
The arrested person will be brought before the Prosecutor of the District Court of Kavala. The preliminary investigation is being conducted by the Department for the Investigation and Detection of Crimes in Kavala, whilst the investigation into the four additional unknown accomplices continues.
