16-year-old boy charged with killing 85-year-old great-grandmother on Práter Street
An elderly woman was found dead in a flat in an eighth-district apartment building on the evening of 15 June. Detectives from the Budapest Police Department's homicide unit quickly suspected the death was not natural and launched an investigation on suspicion of murder.
Police soon identified the suspected perpetrator, who is the victim's 16-year-old great-grandson. According to Blikk, the teenager visited his relative two days before the tragedy with the intention of asking him for financial assistance. However, when the woman refused to give him money, a heated argument erupted between them. According to the publication's information, the boy physically assaulted the elderly woman, then stabbed her multiple times. He took a mobile phone and some jewellery from the scene.
During the investigation, it emerged that the suspect took the stolen goods to a pawn shop in the company of a 15-year-old girl. The young woman attempted to turn the earring into cash.
Police questioned the juvenile suspect and took him into custody. The Budapest Chief Prosecutor's Office requested his detention, citing the fact that he committed the crime with premeditated intent and for material gain, and against a person who, due to her age, was barely able to defend herself.
The 15-year-old girl was also brought in for questioning and is being prosecuted for aiding and abetting. The prosecution suggested a less severe coercive measure for her, consisting of house confinement and electronic monitoring.
In his statement, the suspect denied intentionally killing his great-grandmother. He claimed he only pushed the elderly woman, who fell, and the jewellery fell out of her ear as a result, which he later took.
