Man arrested in Budapest for tax evasion – 110 million forint loss
Authorities seized 21,000 electronic cigarettes and 5,000 packets of cigarettes without tax stamps from a container in Budapest. The suspect was remanded in custody for one month.
Arrest for tax evasion: million forint loss to the budget
According to a statement from the Miskolc Court of Law's Sajóoszta Division, in the case reported by minap.hu, authorities conducted a search on 18 June at a container rented by the suspect at a Budapest premises and seized 21,000 electronic cigarettes and 5,000 packets of cigarettes without tax stamps. The defendant failed to pay the taxes required by law on the goods in question, thereby causing a financial loss of more than 110 million forint to the budget.
According to the court's assessment, the act – if proven – is suitable for establishing the crime of budget fraud committed in a business-like manner causing particularly significant financial loss.
The district court cited the danger of flight and concealment, the possible unlawful influencing of witnesses, and the risk of destruction of evidence still to be uncovered in ordering the remand in custody. The situation is further aggravated by the fact that the suspect has a criminal record and is currently subject to another criminal proceeding for a similar act, which reasonably suggests the likelihood of reoffending.
The court ordered the remand in custody for one month, until 3 October. The order is not final.
