Ventilator scandal: accountant and foreign affairs liaison detained

Győr court detains accountant and foreign affairs liaison in ventilator case

According to forbes.hu's report, authorities have taken into custody the accountant and foreign affairs liaison in the ventilator scandal. Győr District Court granted the prosecution's request, which cited the danger of flight, concealment, and obstruction of evidence.

The National Tax and Customs Administration (NAV) carried out a previous operation in which one man was arrested in Austria on the basis of a European arrest warrant, and 11 other people were questioned as suspects – two of whom were taken into custody.

According to a NAV statement, criminal organisation leaders entered into a contract for the procurement of 800 ventilators and 3 million masks, for which they received 15.6 billion forints from the state. By creating a network of companies that did not conduct actual operations, they caused damage of more than 660 million forints. Part of the proceeds were transferred to a company registered in the United Arab Emirates, with the remainder withdrawn in cash.

One of the key figures in the case, Bálint Májer, sent a message to the NAV in a letter: according to his claim, he has been living in Indonesia with his family for four years, but has begun preparations for his return to Hungary to participate in the proceedings. An arrest warrant currently remains in force against Májer.
