The Sümeg child killer acquitted on grounds of mental state has died

According to information from Index, F. Elemér, who killed his five-year-old son on 8 March 2000 in Sümeg, has died – the case was one of the country's most serious child murders. In his statement, F. Elemér claimed he had acted on the orders of inner voices and was convinced that he needed to find a chip in the boy's chest. Based on expert opinions, the court declared him not culpable and ordered compulsory treatment in a closed institution for him.

After nine years, he was released from the institution. Following his return home, his parents cared for him, and they stood by him throughout. They previously told the press that their son was not a murderer, but a victim of manipulation, and had been forced into a situation where he had no choice but to confess to the terrible act.

Over time, both parents died – the father first, then the mother last year. F. Elemér died a few months later, despite there being no prior knowledge of any serious illness.

According to local accounts, after his release the man reintegrated into everyday life: he shopped, travelled around the town. Many feared him, and children passed on stories about him as horror tales to one another.

His wife divorced him, and they sold their shared house. The woman now said: "It took me seven years to recover from the horrors, and by now I've managed to sort out my life." She added: "I don't want to talk about him anymore, my wounds are healing." Their adult daughter is trying not to be preoccupied with the family's past.
