On Saturday at approximately 4.20 am on Žirmūnų Street in the capital, a BMW 530e car crashed into a street lighting pole. Following the impact, the vehicle broke apart and caught fire. Two passengers – a young woman and a young man – died at the scene. The young driver, born in 2007, was taken to a medical facility. Medical staff established that before getting behind the wheel, she had consumed alcohol – 0.58 parts per million was detected in her blood.
The accident shocked the public, and it soon emerged that this teenager had already driven dangerously on the road before. On 25 May, a Vilnius resident contacted police about an incident in the old town. According to her account, at the intersection of Vilniaus and Islandijos streets, a BMW failed to stop at a STOP sign and almost hit a young child with a tricycle. The first car stopped, but the second vehicle drove on. The child's father managed to pull him away, and the passing driver even managed to insult the man.
The woman reported the matter through the electronic police system. Only later, after seeing photographs of the accident in the media and comparing registration numbers, did she realise it was the same girl.
According to 15min.lt, there were two young women in the car at the time and smoking was taking place. Speaking to the Lrytas.lt portal, the Vilnius resident explained that it was a residential area where pedestrians have priority.
Additionally, the teenager had previously had contact with law enforcement. In August 2022, whilst still a minor, she threw a brick at a public transport bus on Pergalės Street in Vilnius. The damage cost almost 676 euros. Although she avoided criminal liability, she did not compensate for the damage even after a settlement agreement. The service had to turn to court to have the debt recovered by bailiffs.
Police confirmed that they had begun an investigation into the May incident.
